All the two and a half lakh gram panchayats will be getting internet services by 2018 end. Under the first phase of BharatNet project around one lakh panchayats are to be connected by underground optical fibre cable by March. The internet connectivity will help the government's mission of 'less cash economy".
Niti Aayog has decided to rank states and union territories on the basis of digital transactions that are done in their area. This will create a sense of competition among the states/UTs.
