The Supreme Court has given a big boost to transparency by ruling that FIRs must be made public and uploaded on the official web site of the respective state police department or the state government within 24 hours. Exemption has, however, been given to offences of sensitive nature like sexual violence, terrorism or insurgency where right to privacy or where the disclosure can affect the case.

This step will check harassment of the accused. And the much talked of corruption where money is being asked even to get a copy of the FIR will be tackled by this.

SC has said that for North East and J&K where there can be internet connectivity problem the time limit of 24 hrs for uploading could be extended to 72 hours. The deadline set for compliance of this order has been fixed for November 15.
