Sandwich-selling Mom & Daughter Become Champion Powerlifters

Bharat Mahan

This is a very inspiring story of a mother and a daughter who have become champion power lifters. The mother, Jyotika Patekar, 47, is an impoverished sandwich seller. She inspired her daughter, Vaibhavi, 17, to become a state-level power lifter. And, she herself, after a gap of 26 years, became a champion power lifter and now aims to try at national events.

In 1984 Jyotika was in the very first batch of Mumbai girls which participated in the event then. She gave up the sport after her marriage in 1990. Now she is the coach for her daughter.

Vaibhavi is in class XII and stood first in the district level competition in November.

Such stories really motivate others to follow. And the media should also give more of such stories from around the country. Read more of this excellent story by Vijay Singh in TOI.....
