Taking Care Of Planted Saplings Till It Grows

Every day we hear of news of saplings being planted under the tree plantation drive. This is the only way to save the environment for future generation. However, just planting of saplings is not enough. Care has to be taken to see them grow. We are hearing of extensive drives on the banks of rivers, on the sides of railway tracks, state governments drive for this and so on. It would be worth the efforts to find out regularly as to how many of these saplings are growing.

Recently there was a news item by Ramesh Babu that appeared in Hindustan Times which talked of an inspector with Kerala Police - V Vidyadharan, who  has been planting trees along the roads and walkways in the state’s southern Alappuzha and neighbouring Ernakulam districts for more than 40 years now. He  isn’t involved in just planting trees - he nurtures them till they can stand on their own. He has lost the count of the saplings he has planted but says it must have crossed the one lakh mark.
