With the gradual decrease in the prices of LED lamps, more and more municipal bodies are replacing street lights from conventional lamps to the power saving LEDs. This is not only reducing the power bill of the municipal bodies but also helping in reducing carbon dioxide emission.
This programme of replacing conventional lights to LED based is being implemented in 23 states. Rajasthan has topped among all the states and has replaced more than 7 lakh street lights so far. Andhra Pradesh in the no. 2 state and they have replaced some 5.86 lakhs. More than a crore of street lights are to be replaced under this programme.
The total saving from replacements so far is estimated at 295 million units in terms of energy and over 73 mw in terms of generation capacity avoided. In terms of the environment, the replacements are estimated to have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 2.3 lakh tonnes.
