In urban area one can see small bill boards nailed on the trees almost on each one of them on the sides of main thoroughfares. This advertising space is free and so being misused by many.
Tree lovers say that this harms the growth and the life of the tree as the nails get rusted and become poisonous.
Youth in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, under the banner of "Highly Energised Youth for Helping Indians (HeyHI)", have got together and taken up the task of getting rid of these nails and help in increasing the life span of these trees. HeyHI launched the Rescue Tree drive in October. In two months, they have covered over 2,800 trees and removed nearly 100 kg of nails. These young collegians and professionals—armed with hammers, ladders and pluckers—go from tree to tree in a particular area zeroed for that night pulling out advertisement boards and banners nailed to the trunks and branches.
May be this story inspires youth in other cities also to take up this cause.
