Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a flight on Shimla Delhi sector today under the 'Udan' scheme which is aimed at boosting regional connectivity with low-cost flights. And through video link flights on Kadapa-Hyderabad and the Nanded-Hyderabad sectors were also flagged off.
Udan ('Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik') is a first-of-its-kind scheme globally to stimulate regional connectivity through a market-based mechanism, the PMO said in a tweet.
In this scheme, 5 airlines, with 19-78 seater aircrafts, will operate on 128 routes connecting 70 airports. The operators are Air India's subsidiary Airline Allied Services, SpiceJet, Air Deccan, Air Odisha and Turbo Megha.
Connecting the tier-2 and tier-3 cities will give a big boost to tourism and other economic activities. This will provide jobs to thousands.
