We keep on reading news of shortage of judges as being the main reason for the staggering number of pending court cases. The government has made plans to recruit some 6000 judges soon and to seat them 3000 court halls are being constructed.
At present, there are more court halls than the working strength of the subordinate judiciary at 16,413 judicial officers as of December 2016.According to the law ministry , there are 17,300 court halls which is likely to increase to over 20,000 with around 3,000 more courtrooms being added shortly in anticipation of recruiting at least 6,000 judges.
All High Courts have been asked to immediately increase the strength of the subordinate and district judiciary considering that over 2.16 crore cases are pending in these courts.
