Delhi Plans Waste-to-Energy Plants at Wholesale Markets

Delhi government has decided to build waste-to-energy plants at all its wholesale food markets. If it starts working properly and regularly this will be a major boost to the environment issues of capital city. And may be it could be replicated elsewhere too. At any of the wholesale markets around the country we see so much of waste being generated - lifting and taking it away to a designated place becomes so cumbersome and costly, and if it is left there it creates health hazards.

In Delhi the first such plant will be installed at the fish and poultry market in Ghazipur with a second such plant scheduled to come up in the Azadpur fruit and vegetable market. The new proposed plant at Ghazipur will only treat poultry waste, around 10-15 metric tonnes of which is produced at the market on a daily basis. The plant is expected to generate 1800KW of electricity every hour. Besides, each tonne of waste treated would generate approximately 150 kilograms of residual manure which can be re-used. The Azadpur fruits and vegetable market generates 125 metric tonnes of waste each day.
