Under the food security law, the Centre is supplying foodgrains at a highly subsidised rate of Rs 1-3/kg to 72.46 crore beneficiaries in 33 states and union territories. Union food minister Ram VIlas Paswan asks states to initiate a pilot programme to pay cash directly to ration card holders. A good move by the government as there is so much pilferage when the subsidised items find their way to open market, instead of the real needy.
