Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu today presented ‘Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award’ to legal luminary, scholar and former Attorney General of India, K. Parasaran at a function at the India International Centre in New Delhi.
Parasaran was honored with the Award on the occasion of the Elder’s Day celebration of Age Care India, an organization working for the welfare of the elderly.
Conveying his appreciation to Parasaran, the Vice President said, “today, at 92 years, Parasaran stands tall among the entire length and breadth of India in terms of knowledge of law, knowledge of Shastras, erudition and ethics and is rightly referred to as a ‘Pitamaha’ of the Indian Bar”.
He said that the Award was a fitting recognition of Parasaran’s exceptional contribution to the field of law and justice as well as his extra ordinary personality and added that today’s event was a celebration of the incredible positive energy of a deeply spiritual legal practitioner, who has tried to blend both “dharma” and “nyaya”.
Known for his erudition, discipline, hard work, honesty and ethics, Parasaran’s legal canvas has been wide. With equal felicity, Parasaran, throughout his distinguished career, had handled a wide array of cases-- be they serious constitutional matters or inter-State water disputes”, he added.
The Vice President said that Parasaran ji embodied the ideal expressed by poet Kalidasa who had said, in the epic poem, Raghuvamsham, “ vruddhatvam jarasaa vinaa” or the ability to constantly grow in stature without growing old. “He continues to be an ever-passionate and tireless champion of causes dear to his heart”, he added.
Pointing out that India was a civilization that has always been proud of the way we treated our elderly, the Vice President said that we have always given the most esteemed and respectful positions in the society to our elders.
Referring to the reverence enjoyed by the elderly in the past, Naidu said that they were custodians of righteousness, traditions, family honour, samskara and wisdom. “We must build this inter-generational bond once again”, he added.
Expressing concern over the rise in the number of cases of children abandoning their elderly parents, the Vice President described this tendency as a social evil. “This is completely unacceptable”, he asserted. Stating that many elderly persons were also facing neglect and physical, verbal and emotional abuse, he called for a change in the mindset and attitude of the society, especially the younger people, in the treatment of the elderly. He said that children must feel it as their duty to take care of the elders.
The Vice President also said that the New Education Policy must include aspects related to Indian tradition, culture, heritage and history to shape a better future for the younger generation and the nation.
Former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, N.N Vohra and the President of Age Care India, Dr. Kartikeyan were present on the occasion.

उपराष्ट्रपति, एम. वेंकैया नायडू ने आज नई दिल्ली के इंडिया इंटरनेशनल सेंटर में आयोजित एक समारोह में भारत के कानूनी क्षेत्र के नक्षत्र, विद्वान और पूर्व अटॉर्नी जनरल के. पारासरन को ‘सबसे प्रतिष्ठित वरिष्ठ नागरिक पुरस्कार’ प्रदान किया। पारासरन को यह पुरस्कार एज केयर इंडिया के बुजुर्ग दिवस समारोह के अवसर पर प्रदान किया गया। यह संगठन बुजुर्गों के कल्याण के लिए कार्य करता है।
पारासरन की सराहना करते हुए उपराष्ट्रपति ने कहा कि “आज श्री पारासरन का 92 वर्ष की उम्र में भी कानून, शास्त्रों के ज्ञान, नैतिकता और विद्वता के रूप में काफी ऊंचा स्थान है और उनका इंडियन बार के 'पितामह' के रूप में ठीक ही उल्लेख किया गया है।
उन्होंने कहा कि यह पुरस्कार कानून और न्याय के क्षेत्र में उनके असाधारण योगदान के साथ-साथ उनके विशिष्ट व्यक्तित्व की सबसे उचित पहचान के रूप में प्रदान किया गया है। उन्होंने कहा कि आज का यह आयोजन एक गहन आध्यात्मिक कानूनी पेशेवर की अतुल्य सकारात्मक ऊर्जा का समारोह था। उन्होंने "धर्म" और "न्याय" दोनों को मिलाने की कोशिश की।
पारासरन को कानूनी क्षेत्र में अनुशासन, कड़ी मेहनत, ईमानदारी और नैतिकता के लिए जाना जाता है। अपने विशिष्ट कैरियर के दौरान उन्होंने गंभीर संवैधानिक मामलों या अंतर्राज्यीय जल विवादों सहित सभी प्रकार के मामलों को समान रूप से कुशलापूर्वक संभाला है। उपराष्ट्रपति ने कहा पारासरन ने कवि कालिदास द्वारा व्यक्त किए गए आदर्श को मूर्त रूप प्रदान किया है। कालिदास ने रघुवंशम महाकाव्य में कहा है "वृद्धत्वम् जरासा विना" यानी बिना बूढ़ा हुए कद में लगातार बढ़ने की योग्यता। वे हमेशा भावुक और अथक चैंपियन रहे हैं। उन्होंने वकीलों की वर्तमान पीढ़ी को श्री पारासरन से प्रेरणा लेने और पेशेवर उत्कृष्टता एवं नैतिक गुणों को आत्मसात करने का आग्रह किया है। इन गुणों का श्री पारासरन ने हमेशा पालन किया है।
इस बात की ओर इशारा करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि भारत एक ऐसी सभ्यता रहा है जिसमें हमें अपने बुजुर्गों के साथ उचित व्यवहार करने पर हमेशा गर्व रहा है। उन्होंने कहा कि हमने हमेशा अपने बुजुर्गों को समाज में सबसे सम्मानित और सम्मानजनक स्थान दिया है।
अतीत में बुजुर्गों की आज्ञा के पालन का उल्लेख करते हुए नायडू ने कहा कि वे धार्मिकता, परंपराओं, पारिवारिक सम्मान, संस्कार और ज्ञान के संरक्षक थे। उन्होंने कहा कि "हमें एक बार फिर इस अंतर-पीढ़ी लगाव का निर्माण करना चाहिए।"
नायडू ने अपने बुजुर्ग माता-पिता को छोड़ने वाले बच्चों के मामलों की संख्या में हो रही वृद्धि पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए इस प्रवृत्ति को एक सामाजिक बुराई बताया। यह प्रवृत्ति पूरी तरह से अस्वीकार्य है।
यह कहते हुए कि कई बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति उपेक्षा और शारीरिक, मौखिक और भावनात्मक शोषण का सामना कर रहे हैं उपराष्ट्रपति ने बुजुर्गों के इलाज में समाज और विशेषकर युवा लोगों की मानसिकता और दृष्टिकोण में बदलाव लाने का आग्रह किया। उन्होंने कहा कि बच्चों को बड़ों की देखभाल को अपना कर्तव्य समझना चाहिए।
उपराष्ट्रपति ने यह भी कहा कि नई शिक्षा नीति में युवा पीढ़ी और राष्ट्र के बेहतर भविष्य को स्वरूप प्रदान करने के लिए भारतीय परंपरा, संस्कृति, विरासत और इतिहास से जुड़े पहलुओं को शामिल किया जाना चाहिए।
पारासरन ने अपने संबोधन में आयोजकों को पुरस्कार देने के लिए धन्यवाद दिया और दूसरों के दोषों को देखे बिना भक्ति और समर्पण के साथ कर्तव्य निभाने की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया। इस अवसर पर जम्मू-कश्मीर के पूर्व राज्यपाल एन. एन. वोहरा और एज केयर इंडिया के अध्यक्ष डॉ. कार्तिकेयन भी उपस्थित थे।
