The Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar launched the new digital initiative of HRD Ministry ‘National Digital Library of India’on the occasion of National Reading Day in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion Minister said that a new era of Digital India has begun as we dedicate this Digital Library to the Nation. He said that the National Digital Library is a 24x7 ubiquitous knowledge resource that is accessible to anyone with internet access and it is built to enable the rise of Digital India. The Minister said that anybody can access the digital library anytime and anywhere absolutely free of cost and will contribute greatly to the Government’s commitment towards “Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat”.
Ministry of Human Resource Development under its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology had initiated the National Digital Library of India (NDL) pilot project last year. This was to develop a framework of virtual repository of learning resources with a single-window search facility.
Education material on NDL is available from primary to post graduate level. The repository hosts contents from multiple subject domains like technology, science, humanities, agriculture and others.
In a short period the NDL has some 17 million + content items with 30 lakh + registered users.
The repository hosts subject domains like technology, science, humanities, agriculture etc. This digital library is developed by IIT Kharagpur.
And all of this is FREE to users.
