Passengers who book their railway tickets through the IRCTS web site will be able to avail insurance cover for less than 10 Rs for cover of 10 lakhs. This facility is to start from September. Three private insurance companies have been selected to provide this service. They are ICICI Lombard, Shriram General Insurance and Royal Sundaram Alliance.
This insurance cover will be besides the compensation given by the Railways in case of accidents to valid ticket holders. The insurance would provide coverage against death, injury and disabilities caused due to accidents. Compensation would be also provided by the insurance company in case of hospitalisation due to train accidents. Since this scheme will be voluntary the passenger will have to opt for it.
