Solar powered street lights can play a major role in providing light in villages where power supply is poor. There are a number of states where power supply in villages is precarious. A target of electrifying all villages by May 2017 but this does not guarantee power supply all the time.
Union Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines Shri Piyush Goyal has said that a scheme to provide solar powered street lights has been formulated in which the help of Parliamentarians has been sought. In the scheme 75% of the cost of such street lights will be borne by the Central government and the balance 25% will come from the MP's development fund. Shri Goyal informed this at the two-day conference of State Power, New & Renewable Energy & Mines Ministers held in Vadodara, Gujarat last week.
