This is a story that we all should be proud of. Realising the importance of education a family of three, mother, father and the son attended the same class together to appear for class XII examinations. When the results came, the mother and the son could succeed while the father could not succeed.
This is the Mandal family in a remote village, Uttar Patikabari of Nadia district in West Bengal. The boy Biplab, 17, his mother Kalyani, 32 and father Balaram, 42 appeared for the board examinations of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.
Balaram is a farmer and owns a half-acre plot on which he grows seasonal vegetables. In lean season he would work as a daily wager. Kalyani reared goats.
The story of their journey - how the mother had to drop out after class VIII, how the father had to do the same after class IX and how they fulfilled their vision to study further - is very well reported by Esha Roy in The Indian Express. A must read.
