Many a times news comes of army not having bullet-proof vests for all its personnel, of the costs being involved etc. These bullet proof vests have always been imported and cost a whopping one and a half lakh each.
Now comes the good news of one Bengali scientists Dr Shantanu Bhowmick, who is the departmental head of aerospace engineering in Coimbatore's Amrita University, having developed a bullet proof vest which has been approved by the empowered committee of Ministry of Defence. Soon, this should be put under production.
Compared to the high cost of imported vest, the one developed will cost about a third - fifty thousand Rupees for one. This will save the country twenty thousand crores annually. Another special feature of this vest is that it weighs only 1.5 kg compared to 15-18 kg of the imported one.
