In IITs, till now, all the students compulsorily stayed in the hostels. However, in the IIT Council meet on Tuesday a decision has been taken to allow non-resident students to get enrolled. This has been done primarily, with a goal to increase the number of seats to 100,000 by 2020. This will help the students to stay either at their homes or on rented premises outside the campus. In another decision now the students will be allowed to enrollment in PhD immediately after BTech. Earlier they were allowed to do it only after post graduation.
