On the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day on Monday, two government schools - Rajkiyakrit Jamshedpur Balika Uchcha Vidyalaya in Sakchi and Madhya Vidyalaya, Tangrain in Potka - launched sanitary pad banks in their cradles to help girl students get used to the napkins during periods.
"It is a fantastic initiative which will help in educating students of rural areas the importance of using sanitary napkins for their health. The government is also actively supporting the cause, said Ranjana Mishra, director NREP (National Rural Employment Programme).
"We have already created a self-help group in Ghatshila where village women have been trained to manufacture cost-effective sanitary pads which can be sold in the rural market and provide employment to them. I think Akshay Kumar's film PadMan did wonders to create awareness on a subject which was considered a taboo," Mishra added.
