Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Highway Development Programme for Char Dham on Tuesday. The total investment for building the 900 km long highway to connect the holy shrines of Uttarakhand is estimated to be 12000 crores. With this, pilgrimage to the holy abodes of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedranath and Badrinath will become much more safe and convenient.
The development programme includes construction of 13 bypasses realignment, 2 tunnels, 25 major bridges and 3 flyovers. The existing National Highways will be widened by 10 meters and to protect against landslides slope stabilization work will be done. For the convenience of tourists 18 wayside amenities centres would be made. The plan also includes construction of 154 bus stands/bays, truck lay-by.
The entire project is likely to be completed by 2018.
