In the hinterlands of UP , gram pradhans are signing on to social media platforms. The reason: it's easier to access the UP police through the digitial forum than getting the attention of the cop at the thana. Pradhans like Gita Rai (@i8YjlKjW7ZGZX7g) and Sachin Singh (@sachin_kakari) are discovering what urban UP is also waking up to --a Twitter savvy UP police that has shown a remarkable ability to respond to complaints, grievances and suggestions from the common citizen in real time.
The story started last year, recounts Rahul Srivastav, public relations officer for the UP police. “Though we had a Twitter handle from December 2015, it wasn't active. From April 2016, the handle started tweeting. But it was only from September that the Twitter handle (@uppolice) really started responding real time to complaints and suggestions.“ Today , the handle gets around 1,700 tweets from citizens every day.
Police department in all states should now come on this platform to provide better service to citizens of the state and this can become a very active tool to serve.
